2K11 24/7

Doomz tackles a major challenge. A year at a time with daily updates!

The 2K11 24/7 CCLIII: Music to Help You Through the Day

Part of what makes us sluggish is that we get tired of the same stuff al of the time. Same food, same place, same job, same people — and music is no exception.

I listen to all SORTS of music over the course of any given day. New music. Old music. Video game stage music. Ending themes from anime episodes. Obscure disco music. Music from countries where I don't even speak the language. All of it speaks to ME, though, for some reason or another.

But like anything else, if you listen to the same stuff too many times, it gets old. You start skipping songs after recognizing them within the first second of play. The magical feeling you may have once gotten from a song eventually resembles something more like a dull ache. You, along with your tastes, change over time — so why don't we change the music we listen to in order to keep up?

The 2K11 24/7 CXLIII: The Joys of Discovering New Music

So I was sitting around lamenting over a lack of inspiration for writing posts, chatting with my British buddy Jon. So Jon being Jon, with his aptitude for finding new music, sent me over to a service called turntable.

Turntable's basically a service where you can get in a room with friends (of friends) and take turns playing DJ to see who can impress the crowd with their favourite jams. The room I was hitting up in particular was one based off of a blog that I follow — Some Kind of Awesome. In the course of a few hours, I'd racked up a wealth of new artists (well, new to me) that helped spice my day up with a little bit of CHANGE.

Here's just an example of what I was exposed to:

You see, ever since everywhere outside of the US got screwed by not having access to Pandora, it's been a little tougher to come across new music. The radio gives you a little, and if you're dedicated to the blogosphere, you might come across some more — but for the most part, you get whatever's marketed best.

But music inspires us. It takes control of the fibres of our being, transcending our emotions. It can make a bad day amazing, or ruin a great one.

We must always discover new music. I fully believe this is one of the things that keep us going.

So check SKOA out, or one of the many blogs out there tailored to your tastes. As for me, you'll find me in the room waiting for my turn to DJ.

The 2K11 24/7 CXXIII: Blue & Orange

He done did it again.

So after the results of last night's election, I made a tweet about the current state of affairs in the style of Wiz Khalifa's smash hit "Black & Yellow":

Pastedgraphic-1

But then it got me thinking - what WOULD a rap about the massive landslide victories of the majority and official opposition parties sound like? That's when I got to work.

When I'm writing a rap, I usually try to have a decent mix of the following:

  • Witty punchlines;
  • Topical statements; and
  • Multiple forms of rhyme structure

Didn't really have too much of these in the last event-based rhyme I put out, so I tried to do a little better this time around.

When it came down to content, I tried to focus on:

  • The party platforms;
  • The events of election day; and
  • General critique of how we act as voters.

Anyway, this is what I managed to come up with for tonight's post :) I hope you enjoy it! Lyrics are found beneath the fold.

Upular: An "Up" Music Video

This is the kind of stuff that one of my local comic shops posts about on its blog - a music video composed almost entirely of sound bytes from the movie "Up".

It's called "Upular". It's going on my iPod. IMMEDIATELY.

Trust me. It's awesome.

Rochester aka Juice - A New Day

My jam of the moment: Rochester - "A New Day". I only heard this song for the first time at a party last night, and I knew I needed to find out more about it.

Reppin' Toronto's Islington/Finch intersection, Rochester's had a bit of acclaim in our community, and with this, I can see why. This song's just damn addictive. Was hard for me to believe at first that it came from the T-Dot, but you can hear the influences subtly in the undertones of the rhythm.

Listen, support and give props. I'm probably going to hunt this record down this week.
